What is Extreme Cowboy Racing?

Extreme Cowboy Racing is a timed equestrian sport that combines speed, precision, and real-world ranch skills. Riders guide their horses through a challenging obstacle course designed to simulate tasks you’d encounter on a working ranch—things like opening gates, crossing bridges, dragging objects, navigating tight turns, and handling varied terrain. What makes it “extreme” is the combination of technical obstacles and speed. Competitors are scored on both how fast they complete the course and how well they perform each obstacle, with penalties for mistakes like knocking objects, refusing obstacles, or unsafe handling. At its core, Extreme Cowboy Racing is about building a well-rounded horse and rider team—one that’s confident, responsive, and capable in unpredictable situations. It’s open to riders of all levels, from beginners to seasoned competitors, and emphasizes horsemanship, control, and partnership just as much as competition.
Extreme Cowboy Racing is governed by the EXCA - Extreme Cowboy Association.
